The Friends and End-of-Life Care
The Friends have a particular interest in helping to improve the hospital experience for patients receiving end-of-life care. Since 2012 we have funded 13 ‘Butterfly Rooms’ across both Trust sites to provide additional comfort and a peaceful environment for patients at the end of life and their families. Since February 2024 we have also funded the salary of the Butterfly Volunteer Manager, who recruits and oversees a team of volunteers trained to support end-of-life patients. This service was originally created with the support of the Anne Robson Trust, a national charity which supports healthcare organisations to set up and run teams of specialist end-of-life volunteers.
We are raising funds under the name ‘the Butterfly Project’ to continue our support for both of these valuable services into 2025 and beyond.
“Our mother spent her last days in the newly created Butterfly Rooms and we couldn’t have asked for anything better. She was very comfortable, and for us and the rest of the family it was a quiet and calm room in which we could spend as much time as we needed to be with her to say goodbye. Thank you to everyone involved in the creation of this room.” (Quote from relative of patient who passed away in one of the Butterfly Rooms)
“As a Butterfly Volunteer I have been privileged to spend time with patients in their last weeks, days or even hours. A moment we will all have to face one day. I call it the big mystery of life. What I have witnessed is that being given that time to say goodbye to your loved ones is of course very sad but in a way also truly beautiful. And to be a small part of that process with a patient and their families has been nothing but rewarding. True connections in a short space of time. One thing is for sure; after each shift I walk out of the hospital feeling incredibly blessed.” (Quote from a Butterfly Volunteer)
